The 34th annual Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival (FLIFF) will present the documentary program, Above and Below, at 11 a.m., on November 10, at Cinema Paradiso, 2008 Hollywood Boulevard, Hollywood, and 4 p.m., November 12, at Savor Cinema, 503 Southeast 6th Street, Fort Lauderdale.

The program includes three fascinating documentary films spotlighting the plight of our oceans and marine life. Attending their films are Zachary Thomas Hoagland, director of Lionfish: Menace to the Atlantic Basin, and Angela Smith, director of Whales of Change, which follows researchers as they race to save compassionate sperm whales from extinction. The third documentary, Of the Sea, is an inspirational film about a surfer and mother’s entrepreneurial efforts to raise awareness of global plastic consumption.

Screened back-to-back starting at noon, on November 11, are the documentaries L’eau est la Vie (Water is Life): From Standing Rock to the Swamp, telling of Louisiana’s indigenous women fighting to stop corporate fossil fuel companies, and Sweetwater, a deeply personal, ultimately hopeful story about the decline of South Florida’s waterways and the fight to recover them, followed by a Q&A session with Alex Gillen, of Bullsugar.
