Single use plastics, such as plastic cutlery, straws, cups, water bottles, etc., are destroying our oceans and ocean life. In Florida, they are killing the sea turtle population by damaging their habitats, inhibiting their breeding, killing them in the sea and often times they are caught up by waste. One piece of plastic can kill (https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-45509822).
Joy, host of Joy of Organics Produce Buying Club, recently took a trip to the paradise of Hawaii and discovered they do not offer bags in any store, including Walmart. Within this list of states, there are some that have only one city that successfully banned single use plastic before the state legislation stepped in to prohibit further banning of plastic: CA, AZ, AK, CO, CT, DC, FL, IA, MA, ME, NC, NJ, NM, NY, OR, RI, SC, TX, UT, and VT. As well, more than 60 countries have introduced bans.
At the Joy of Organics Buying Club, they recommend 15 reusable produce bags for $15, more than anyone would need in one trip to the store. If each person managed only this one thing, we would eliminate millions of pounds of petroleum-based plastic toxicity every day.
Rather than inadvertently supporting corporate petroleum waste products, we can deliberately support the world’s oceans and sea life back to health.
